I started my academic career at University of North Carolina — Chapel Hill, Department of Anthropology, in 1979. I taught there until moving to the University of California — Davis in 2002, where I was Chair from 2005 to 2009, and from 2009 to 2014 I served as the Associate Dean for Academic Personnel and Instructional Resources, Division of Social Sciences. I retired from UC Davis in 2014 and I am currently Emerit Professor, Department of Anthropology and Graduate Group in Ecology.
